Character Name: Ami Mizuno
Character Canon: Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon (manga)

History: I am Sailor Mercury! Douse yourself in water and repent!

AU History:

I have been granted permission to use other Sailor Senshi in Ami’s AU history.

During the time of the Savior, Ami used to be one of her companions, fighting alongside the Savior. Then, she sought to find a peaceful solution rather than seek the destruction of the Gods, though she was willing to fight and protect those she loved. Now, reincarnated, Ami is an Enlightened child, though she herself doesn’t know that yet.

At a young age, Ami showed herself to be incredibly intelligent. She could solve challenging riddles and problems, she could read advanced texts, able to go well and beyond children older than her. She was proclaimed to be a young prodigy, a genius. Her upbringing was nothing but schools and tests. As the only daughter of a famous medic and a wandering painter, Ami has had an ideal upbringing in the city of Union, living in the same social circles as Michiru Kaioh and Haruka Tenoh knowing the older women by their reputation as famous musicians and thespians, as well as being in similar social standing as them.

Her mother made sure that she had the best schooling available to her, even sending Ami to finishing school to ensure her daughter’s place in society. Outside of academia, her mother insisted upon Ami taking up harp lessons to further round out her daughter’s upbringing. However, Ami saw very little of her mother as she was a workaholic. Her father wasn’t even in the picture of her childhood, as he had gone off to wander outside the city to paint the wonders he saw. While her mother was loving and her father remembered to send a painting of whatever new pokemon he found while out on her birthday, Ami grew up alone with only her tutors and teachers as company. Her schooling and lessons didn’t allow her time to hang out after school with other children and because of her innate shyness and intelligence, Ami couldn’t really make friends with them regardless. This inevitably led them to regard her as a rich, smart snob.

As Ami got older, she retreated further and further into her studies and private hobbies. When Ami needed to escape the pressure of schooling and her own intellect, she’d go to lakes and pools, feeling calm and connected to the water. Ami wanted to become a medic like her mother. She desired to use her knowledge to help others, pokemon and people alike. While her mother didn’t really approve of wandering outside of the city to go bond with pokemon (partially because there was always someone to be healed, and partially out of resentment for her husband just one day leaving them) Ami wanted to try her hand at being bonded to a pokemon. In fact, it is the bond with pokemon that have made Ami less lonely, since she still has very little human interaction.

Ami, now 16, has gone past all available schooling, now spending her days trying to enrich her studies in other ways with experiences alongside her bonded pokemon. Very little time is spent at home, as Ami has no one there to greet her.

Canon Personality:

Young genius, loyal friend, soldier for justice, defender of the earth and galaxy, and somewhat a stick-in-the-mud. All these things describe Ami Mizuno also known as guardian Sailor Mercury and Princess of Mercury.

Upon first meeting Ami, she is quiet and reserved. She can even be considered awkward as she demonstrates difficulty in being a social person and making friends with people. Her timidness, when she is first met in the manga, is misconstrued as snobbishness and Ami seems unable to break through her own shyness to even correct these assumptions. When she’s engaged in conversation, she is extremely polite and soft-spoken, not likely to encourage discourse past normal pleasantries, and certainly not likely to start the conversation herself. Her shyness is what keeps her from making friends in the beginning of the series and Ami functioned this way for years until she was 14. Even Ami, if asked, would openly admit to her unease in social situations and that her only skills were in studying, reading, and computers.

However shy she is, her brilliance is not something that can be hidden. Ami scores the highest in her exams, not just in the tests at her school, but nationally in Japan. Ami can analyze any situation in a matter of seconds. She can watch someone do something, like Usagi playing a video game, and not only understand what needs to be done, but then master that ability. Even her enemies, later in the series, recognized her intelligence and would find themselves trying to challenge it, only to fail. Ami’s capable of taking small pieces of information and putting the whole puzzle together. Just like her introverted-personality causes people to think she’s standoffish, her intelligence can easily intimidate people.

Well, unless that someone is Usagi Tsukino, the physical embodiment of sunshine. Usagi was Ami’s first friend. She wanted to become her friend when she saw that Ami’s silence was not from snobbery, but timidness. Usagi saw that Ami was actually quite gentle and kind, cuddling with Usagi’s pet cat Luna. Usagi saw her brilliance not as something intimidating, but incredibly admirable and endeavored to get Ami to open up to her. Ami had never had someone so open and friendly towards her before. Ami was quick to reciprocate the act of friendship, spending time with Usagi and admiring the other for her openness and friendliness. That Ami turned out to be Sailor Mercury really just ended up being a bonus to the whole situation.

The more the series goes on, the more everyone comes to realize that Ami is far more than just a reserved genius. As things progress, Ami shows that she isn’t just gentle and kind, but incredibly brave and loyal as well. She wants to help people, and save lives as a doctor. Once it’s revealed that Ami is Sailor Mercury, she doesn’t say "it's not for me," and pretend that such things as powers and other-worldly beings trying to hurt others should be left up to authorities. Rather, being Sailor Mercury makes saving lives a much sooner reality. At no point does Ami just disregard her newly gained powers and abilities, rather she willingly fights beside Usagi and the other senshi. She shows incredible bravery despite being only 14, fighting enemies who are willing to kill and harm others, and her for that matter, for their personal gain. Despite being faced with such challenges, she not only fights but analyzes the enemies multiple times in order to try and get the sailor senshi an advantage on the enemy and is right in the thick of battle alongside the others. Ami faces monsters and dangers and helps defeat such things with a firm resolve. She especially can’t stand seeing someone use their intelligence on others in a malicious way, wanting to see knowledge used only for good and the betterment of society.

While Ami doesn’t make many friends outside of the senshi throughout the rest of the series, what friends she does make, she holds dear. She stands by them through thick and thin, even when things look bleak. Usagi is especially held dear to her, not just as her princess and future queen, but as her first friend among all the girls. Ami develops close bonds with all the girls in different ways. In fact, she wants to ensure they succeed, offering to help them study for tests and homework, as well as enforcing the importance of doing well on tests for the future. Ami never show unease from being included in group activities, enjoying spending time with the girls, unless it interferes with cram school or studying. In this way, she is considered a bit of a stick-in-the-mud, regarding schooling as more important than fun. However, the girls can usually persuade Ami to join them for fun activities rather than study, or if Ami is so deeply entrenched, they accept her decision and potentially even study with her.

Ami becomes far more confident as things progress, however, as the Infinity and Dream Arcs show, she still has some major insecurities. Due to her parents being divorced, her father not really involved in her life and her mother always being busy from being a doctor, Ami fears that distance between her and parents. She is scared that they will leave her completely, this same fear applies to her friends. Ami also fears failing and not achieving her own dreams and aspirations. However, she grows and develops, realizing that being a senshi doesn’t stop her from attaining these things. Her desires to be with Usagi and the girls and being a doctor don’t have to conflict. Being a senshi and being a Doctor are both goals she can realize and Ami knows she has the support of the other girls to reach these aspirations. Though some fears still linger in her heart, Ami does have complete and unwavering faith in her friends, especially in Usagi. Ami believes that eventually Usagi will always succeed, willingly throwing down her life to protect Usagi and the other senshi, which she does multiple times throughout different arcs in the manga.

As a pretty suited senshi, a princess of Mercury, and the guardian to the moon princess, Ami actually balances being a teenager and the duties of a senshi quite well. Her hobbies are chess, computers, swimming, and reading. In fact, Ami will read anything, from novels to comic books, magazines, and romance novels, so long as she’s reading. Although she does enjoy romance novels more than she’d like to admit (pop culture too, for that matter). Despite her enjoyment for romance novels, Ami herself gets flustered easily by love letters and flattery directed at her personally. This is specifically addressed in Ami’s First Love, she will break out into hives and a rash when she is forced to deal with love letters. Flattery and compliments tend to make her blush and a bit flustered. Also seen in Ami’s First Love as well as the Infinity arc, is Ami’s competitiveness. Due to how intelligent Ami is, she always tops the charts in tests and exams, so when someone challenges her intelligence, intentionally or otherwise, Ami is quick to accept, wanting to succeed above them and in some ways, crush the competition. Most of the time this competitiveness is in good sport, but sometimes Ami can really obsess about the competition (this is more true in Ami’s First Love than it is in the Infinity Arc). To calm herself down or to clear her head, Ami often goes swimming. When she’s in or near water, she feels calm, having a close connection to it and even able to do some dowsing because of that connection. Most of her attacks are water or ice themed, further showing that connection both in and out of her senshi form.

Water and chess are how Ami calms herself down, feeling the serenity and clarity they offer respectively. This is particularly important because even though Ami becomes more confident and open as the series progresses, Ami remains rather uptight. She maintains tight schedules for cram schools, studying, friends, eating, and just about everything else. It’s not uncommon for the other girls to insist Ami needs to relax and unwind. However, her schedules are more often than not, easily forgoing them for time with the girls and are always disregarded in the face of an enemy.

Ami, the guardian of Intelligence, is far more than just a bookworm. She’s brave and devoted, just like the other senshi. She’s gentle and kind, sometimes getting flustered and awkward, and maybe a little uptight. Once she’s able to open up to those who can see past her shyness, she’s loyal to the friends she makes and will stay beside them and sacrifice everything for them.

AU Deviation:

In this AU deviation, Ami isn’t terribly different from her canon self. Ami’s more like when we first meet her in the manga. She’s shy, withdrawn, and a bit awkward from not having any human friends. She’ll be gentle and kind with pokemon. As she progresses in game, she will open up and become more confident and assured in herself. She does have a greater desire to break out from her social status and just experience things but she is afraid to do so, and still believes her greatest ability is to study. She still wants to be a medic, like her mother, but for both pokemon and people.

As Ami has not faced the many challenges and battles she faced as a senshi, she will be a bit more bold and forward when it comes to defending the bonds between people and pokemon rather than her princess and planet. Furthermore, her AU deviation will be more inclined to exploring outside of the city to try and understand their ancestors as well as pokemon.

Canon Abilities/Items: Ami has many abilities and items both in and outside of civilian form.
Abilities:
Super Intelligence: Ami is a genius. She has a rumored IQ of 300, can make snap analysis as well as take in multiple forms of data to find the most accurate approach to situations. She is also a master at playing chess.

Adept at Technology: Of all the senshi, Ami is the most adept at technology and computers. Using even a computer in battle early in the series.

Dowsing: Because of her connection to water, Ami can actually dowse water without any instruments, able to naturally sense and hear it no matter how far it may be from her.

Sailor Mercury Abilities:

Mercury Aqua Mist: Using her ability to manipulate water while as Sailor Mercury, Ami can create solid and dense clouds of mist and fog, chilling and blinding the enemy allowing the other senshi or allies of the senshi time to create and use more direct attacks. This attack is usually defensive in nature but it can defeat weak enemies.

Hyperspatial Sphere Generate: Used only once in the manga to protect the arcade Ami and the senshi have their hideout at and how it works isn’t entirely clear. However it seems to distort the space around its user, creating a "subspace pocket" separated from the rest of the world. This is a defensive ability and Ami can only use it if wearing the Mercury Goggles.

Shine Aqua Illusion: An offensive attack that blasts enemy with a powerful stream of water which can freeze an enemy in place. It is the first straight offensive attack that Mercury has. Mercury can also use this attack to create a barrier of solid ice between her and the enemy.

Shine Snow Illusion: An offensive attack only in the manga. Mercury is able to create a powerful freezing blizzard and use it to surround her enemy. It can freeze an enemy completely, thus destroying them

Mercury Aqua Mirage: An offensive attack. It engulfs an enemy in a pool of water and will then burst, destroying the object inside.

Mercury Aqua Rhapsody: The most powerful of Mercury’s attacks. Using the Mercury Harp that Mercury is able to summon, she plays the harp and sends incredibly powerful blasts of water at the enemy. The blast is also capable of freezing the enemy and destroying them in that matter. Mercury can also use the attack to weaken the enemy if they are much stronger than her.

Magical Items:
Mercury Crystal: The Mercury Crystal is an actual item but it is held within Ami. It is in fact connected to her and its destruction causes her death. The Mercury Crystal is how Ami transforms into Sailor Mercury when she cries out the phrase to activate the transformation.

Mercury Harp: Ami has the ability to summon the Mercury Harp while as Sailor Mercury. With the harp, she can perform her most powerful attack, Mercury Aqua Rhapsody. The Mercury Harp can only be summoned by Mercury and no one else.

Micro-miniature Super Computer/Compact: This enables her to make special calculations, scan her surroundings, track the movements of allies as well as foes, and determine her enemies' weak points and use them in battle.

Mercury Goggles: The Mercury Goggles work in sync with her super computer which analyze the area around her and display information in front of her eyes and on the computer.

Mercury Visor and Microphone: The visor and microphone materializes across her face when she touches her earring. The microphone allows her to communicate with Luna at the Sailor Soldiers' hideout during the manga's first arc

Enlightened Abilities: Ami will be a Water/Ice type. Her trainer ability is: Analyst.

Innate:Ami’s innate abilities will be similar to: Bubble, Powder Snow, Water Gun and Hail.

With her innate abilities, she will actually draw the water from the air itself if there is no source of water around. She will be able to freeze the water pulled from the air if she so desires. Ami’s innate abilities will be a mix of defensive and lightly offensive moves with a knowledge of Pokemon abilities and how they can be used.

First Evolution: Ice Ball, Water Pulse, Whirlpool, Freeze dry.

Ami after her first evolution will have stronger moves overall but will still have abilities that can be used for both offensive and defensive purposes.

Second Evolution: Blizzard, Aurora Beam, Frost Breath, Ice beam

In Ami’s final evolution, all of her abilities will be mostly offensive with the possibility of causing defensive actions like freezing someone in place. However, theses will be her strongest offensive abilities.

While Ami will not have an enhanced item at the start, for her second evolution I would like her to gain an enhanced item similar to the Mercury Harp. Using her ability to play the harp, Ami will be able to send her abilities through the harp to allow her more distance and higher accuracy.

Starter Pokémon:
Shinx, Female Level 12 - named Aurora
Hoothoot, Female Level 9 - named Minerva or "Minnie" for short.

Notes/Special Considerations:
None at this time aside from her Enhanced Item. Although I would love to have her intelligence come into play for something in the future but I imagine that’s a bridge to be crossed when it comes to it.

SAMPLES

First-Person:
Test-drive thread!

Third-Person:

Assuming a professor is asking Ami these questions:

What would you say the role of Pokémon is in your life?
My Pokémon was my very first friend while growing up. The other children I went to school with and I never became close. But I have my Pokémon and I would do everything I could to make sure she is happy and healthy. Pokemon teach us how others, people or Pokémon, should be treated, is my belief. I feel more comfortable around most Pokémon than most people... [Ami blushed when she realized she said that out loud but it was nonetheless true.]

What do you feel your role in Union is?
It is my hope to one day become a medic not just for the people of Union, but for pokemon as well. I hope to be able to study to help both of them should ever the need arise.

What do you seek for humanity’s future?
Our ancestors of the past advanced too quickly without regard for the Pokémon nor the world around us. But advancement itself is not something that should be disregarded or even feared. I hope that we are able to advance once more, however, this time we're wiser and more cautious as we move forward with our technology, using the bonds with our Pokémon as a reminder of the second chance we were given by the gods.

To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?
[What a very personal question...] If... [Well, if she did have friends, allies, as the question was phrased.] I would do everything within my ability to get them home safe. I would make a well thought out plan and head out with necessary supplies and medical equipment, if need be. I would ensure to maintain contacts with those not in the wilderness should something occur. I would also try to discern the location, of course, of my friend. It wouldn't do to go searching about wildly, but if that's what it took to find them, then that's what I would do.

What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond?
I hadn't really thought of bonding with Pokémon in this way, though it certainly poses an interesting question. When I look to bond with a Pokémon, I should hope they want to bond with me as well. Which might sound silly to say, but I think it's very important to consider the feelings of your Pokémon, especially when it's a bond in question. I couldn't say for certain what I look for in Pokémon I bond with. I just look at them and something pulls me towards them.

You are alone and bereft of your Pokémon allies, upon what strengths do you rely on to see yourself safely home?
My first concern is what might have happened to my Pokémon. However, after that matter is addressed, I would calm myself down and think about my situation, assess what occurred and how. Am I injured? Do I have supplies or tools at hand? Once I am able to determine my situation, I make a plan with multiple possibilities and adjust it accordingly as I travel to get to safety. Nothing makes a situation worse than panic!

You plunge into the depths of the Old City. What is it that you seek from the past? Treasure, technology, wisdom?
[Pardon Ami as she goes a bit starry-eyed at the prospect of exploring the old city.] Just imagine the things we could discover! The ancient technology, the culture, if they knew any mathematics or sciences we may not know anymore! Oh, and just the archeological prospect alone! It would be wonderful, is this an actual opportunity you are providing? I gladly volunteer my services to go looking into the Old City! I will endeavor to maintain the integrity of the site while seeking new discoveries.

When encountering a rare and powerful Pokémon, what is most important? Researching it, bonding with it, or defeating it? Why?
I would say bonding and then researching the Pokémon is what would be the most important. By first bonding with the Pokémon, they are more likely to feel at ease with you allowing you to then research them without stressing the Pokémon. Bonding is itself a form of research. You must learn the likes and dislikes of your Pokémon to better take care of them. They must go hand-in-hand!

What strengths make you most qualified for your role within Union?
I'm afraid I'm only very good at studying. So I suppose it is best that I become a medic and use my studying for the betterment of others.
